Jesus hates this false religious system.  It has blasphemed His

Holy Name, His Holy Word, and has deceived billions of people.

He calls her The Mother of Abominations. . . and has promised

to destroy her, and all those with her.

These lines refer to the Catholic Church.  They come from a little booklet published in 1985 and currently available for reading or for purchase on the internet.  They're only 15 cents each.  If you order 10,000, the price goes down to 7½ cents.

In our first reading God says that he will not lump together the innocent with the guilty.  But we human beings do it all the time, condemning whole groups of people without ever bothering to find out who is or isn't actually guilty of some offense.  What we're talking about is really prejudice, which is unfortunately still very much a part of our world, our society, and even our own lives.  People today continue to face prejudice for all kinds of reasons: not only religion but also race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, income, education, and physical appearance.  Just consider for a moment the people we don't want to see on the same flight, the people we don't want living down the street from us, the people we don't want greeting our customers, the people we don't want around our kids.

As Christians, we can't just lump people together--unless it is to say that we are all created in the image and likeness of God.  Every human person, then, whether innocent or guilty, has a special dignity that we must respect.  As for those individuals who are actually guilty of some offense, we have no permission to condemn them either.  Jesus reminds us: "love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." (Luke 6:27-28)

In today's gospel Jesus teaches the disciples to pray for the coming of God's kingdom.  We all can help to prepare for that kingdom by replacing prejudice with an attitude of welcome and openness.  Let us spread not a blanket condemnation but understanding and compassion.
