The Homily of Trinity Sunday

By Fr. Kimm

Back in 1981 Diana Ross asked the musical question, "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"  The experts can talk all they want -bout attractions and chemical reactions but the truth is that no one really knows why we fall in love.  Nor, for that matter, do we know why a person falls in love with one person and not another, why the people we love don't always love us back, or why some people seem to love too much and some people seem to love too little.  Think about all the people we are happy to love; all the people who are happy to love us; all of the people we loved and lost; and all of the people who perhaps loved us without us ever knowing.  Love is truly one of the great unsolved mysteries of our human existence.

It is no surprise, then, that our belief in the Trinity is so baffling.  It's really about God choosing to love us in not one, not two, but three different ways: as the Father of all that is good; as Jesus Christ, God who became our brother; and as the Holy Spirit, God as he continues to work in the world and in our lives.  The mystery of the Trinity is the mystery of love.
