The Homily of 3rd Easter

By Fr. Kimm

I cheered when I discovered we would be starting daylight saving time a little earlier this year.  In spite of the annoyance of having to reset all of my clocks and watches, I enjoy the extra hours of daylight.

Sometimes we go forward; sometimes we go back.

In our gospel story, the disciples are fishing again.  But aren't these the same men who had previously "left everything" (Lk 5:11) to follow Jesus?  The disciples' return to their nets is symbolic: they haven't gone back just to their old line of work, they've also gone back to their old ways and the same state of faith they had when Jesus first called them.

We hope that as time goes by we are progressing in our spiritual lives, that we are growing as Christians.  But old habits are hard to break and old patterns of behavior and old attitudes are hard to change.  We all have to admit that sometimes we find ourselves moving backward instead of forward: we judge others when we have decided to stop judging; we are impatient with family members when we have resolved to be more patient; we are slow to volunteer when we have committed ourselves to fuller participation in the parish community; we are careless about our prayer when we have vowed to pray regularly and devotedly.

Still, there is no reason to worry.  Going back to their old lives does not prevent the disciples from receiving a visit from the Lord; Jesus appears to them anyway.  We should remember that Jesus is with us, whether we are moving forward or moving backward, whether we are living the new life he won for us or not living the new life he won for us.  Wherever we are, forward or back, Jesus is standing before us, calling us to share ever more abundantly in his risen life and offering us the grace and strength to keep moving forward.
