We've all been to potlucks, those meals where everyone is expected to bring something to share.  It takes a little organization to make sure there's the right number of salads, main dishes, and desserts.  And yes, there's always the danger of having too many things made out of macaroni.  But as long as everyone brings something to the potluck, most people leave happy.

The Eucharist is a sacred meal at which Jesus is our host and he offers himself as our food and drink.  But we can't go to this meal empty-handed.

We must bring to the Eucharist a spirit of unity.  We are not here to have time alone with God; we are here to worship together, as a community.  We are supposed to respond to the prayers, sing when invited to do so, greet one another warmly, and even sit right next to other people.

We must bring to the Eucharist a spirit of love.  There is no room in this church for judgments or gossip.  Instead, we are to regard one another as brothers and sisters, to treat one another with kindness and respect, to welcome with open arms all who enter our doors, regardless of who or what they might be.

We must bring to the Eucharist a spirit of forgiveness.  Whether those who have hurt us are members of the parish or people we have never met, enemies on the other side of the world, we cannot look on them with hate if we hope to approach God's altar.

We must bring to the Eucharist a spirit of generosity.  Jesus gave his life that we might live.  If we're going to gather in his name, we have to be willing to give as he gave, to empty ourselves in the service of the parish, the Church, the world.

We must bring to the Eucharist a spirit of thankfulness.  We have to recognize that the good things we have received during the past week, during our lives, have not come through our own efforts but as gifts from God, the giver of all good gifts.

Jesus comes to this sacred meal of the Eucharist ready to share his life with us.  Jesus expects us to bring to this sacred meal a spirit of unity, a spirit of love, a spirit of forgiveness, a spirit of generosity, and a spirit of thankfulness.  If we do our part, as Jesus has done his part, we will find only joy and peace at the table of the Lord.
