Epiphany Sunday Mass

By Fr. Kimm

When you wish upon a star,

Makes no difference who you are.

           Anything your heart desires

           Will come to you.

So sings Jiminy Cricket in Disney’s 1940 classic animated film, “Pinocchio.”  Even though Jiminy’s pal got his wish—Pinocchio the puppet became a real boy—I doubt that many of us will put much faith in lucky stars.

Actually, the star on which we focus so much attention today can be lucky, as long as we allow the coming of Christ to make us better human beings: more generous, more courageous, more compassionate, more selfless.  If we allow the coming of Christ to shape us, to transform us into people who are more like him, the star which announced his birth will bring good fortune to the hungry who are fed by us, to the lonely who are befriended by us, to the grieving who are comforted by us, to the weak who are defended by us, to the lost who are guided by us.

Imagine what would happen if the coming of Christ affected the life of every single person on earth, changing each man and woman forever into someone who works with the hands of Christ, who speaks with the voice of Christ, who thinks with the mind of Christ, who loves with the heart of Christ.  The Star of Bethlehem would then be a lucky star for the world.
