The 20th Anniversary Speech

By Fr. Kimm

I invite you to read the article in the Anniversary booklet if you would like to see my reflections on the years I spent serving the children and young people of the community,

Today I have a simple message for you. But first, I want to remind you of something from the history of modern China. As some of you remember from history class or perhaps from personal experience, in 1937, after years of aggression by the Japanese, war finally broke out between China and Japan. The Nationalists and Communists, who had been fighting each other for control of China, decided that the only way to save their country from the Japanese would be to join forces. This is a good illustration of what Jesus means when he says in the gospel of Mark, "If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand” (3:24). If bitter enemies can work together, it should be much easier for people who claim to be brothers and sisters in Christ. The best advice I can give you is this: love one another as members of one family. More specifically, I encourage you to

·        respect other people's opinions even when you don't agree;

·        make compromises;

·        say positive things about people;

·        be patient when people make mistakes or are slow to understand; and

·        thank people when they do something good for you.

These tasks are more difficult than you may think.

This special anniversary is a time to look back on the past but it is also a time to look to the future. I know you wonder what the future will be like. The single most important thing that you can do for the future of the community is to love one another. Your loving behavior will attract new members, inspire old members to become more active, and give the young people a reason to stay. May God help you to have love for one another, for that love will make future bright.
